I will spend some time discussing the colors of a Great Dane..those colors that are acceptable according to breed standard. The acceptable colors include: Fawn, Blue, Brindle, Black, Harlequin, Merle.
Today’s color will be
BLUE
This happens to be my favorite Great Dane Color. A Blue Great Dane is so noble and unique with the bluish, steely grey shine of its coat. The color has to be a pure steel blue and white markings on the chest and toes are not desirable. Blue Danes may have lighter eyes; making them even more unique.

…and he also happens to be the world’s tallest Therapy Dog! Certified by the Guiness Book of World Records, the tallest dog living is Gibson, a 4 year old Harlequin Great Dane who measured 107 cm (42.2 in) tall on August 31 2004 and is owned by Sandy Hall of Grass Valley, California, USA. When he stands on his hind legs, the 170-pound Dane is more than 7 feet tall, taller than most NBA basketball players. Check out the Youtube video of him!!

Just Nuisance was the only dog ever to be officially enlisted in the Royal Navy. He was a Great Dane who from 1939-44 served at HMS Afrikander, a Royal Navy shore establishment in Simon’s Town, South Africa. Just Nuisance was entitled to the same benefits as any other Able Seaman, which included a cap. Nuisance had been involved in a car accident which had caused thrombosis which was gradually paralysing him, so on 1 January 1944 he was discharged from the Navy. His condition continued to deteriorate; on 1 April 1944 he was taken to Simon’s Town Naval Hospital where on the advice of the naval veterinary surgeon, he was put to sleep. The next day he was taken to Klaver Camp where his body was draped with a Royal Naval White Ensign and he was buried with full naval honours, including a gun salute and the playing of the Last Post. A simple granite headstone marks his grave, but a statue was erected in Jubilee Square in Simon’s Town to commemorate his life. The Simon’s Town Museum has a room dedicated to his story, and since 2000 there has been an annual parade of Great Danes from which a lookalike is selected.

I grew up in South Africa, and once a week, I was rooted to the t.v, watching my favorite show called “Just Nuisance”. There are a number of famous Great Danes. Scooby Doo….Marmaduke….and yes, even Just Nuisance, for that was his name. Just Nuisance was the most famous of South African dogs, (only after Jock of the Bushveld, but that remains for another day’s writing, and a totally different Blog), since this Blog is dedicated to one of the most beautiful dog breeds: The Great Dane.
Welcome to my Blog. I hope to share informative and exciting posts with you, that will leave you coming back for more. Whether you have a passion for Great Danes, or own one (or a couple), please leave a comment, an opinion since I value all your feedback. Let me tell you about Just Nuisance…and so…let the fun begin…in “large” quantities.
